A few things that change the numbers

  • Interest method. On a reducing balance, each instalment pays down principal so interest falls every month. A flat rate charges the same interest on the full amount throughout.
  • Charges come off the top. Processing and insurance are deducted at disbursement, so you receive slightly less than the amount you borrow.
  • Your deposits set the ceiling. The amount you qualify for depends on your deposits, existing loans, guarantors and repayment capacity.
  • The one-third rule. For salaried members, total deductions should leave at least a third of your salary as take-home pay.
