Build an emergency fund in six months

Medical bills, a broken phone, a sudden trip home — emergencies are certain; only their timing is not. A simple plan to build your safety net.

An emergency fund is money set aside for the unexpected. Without one, every surprise becomes a loan — often an expensive mobile loan. With one, a surprise is just an inconvenience.

How much do you need?

A common goal is three to six months of essential expenses: rent, food, transport, utilities and school costs. That can sound daunting, so start with a first milestone of one month’s essentials, then build from there.

The six-month plan

Month 1 — Know your number

Add up one month of essential spending. Write it down. That is your first target.

Month 2 — Separate it

Keep emergency money away from your everyday account so it is not spent by accident. A dedicated savings product works well — ideally one you can reach quickly when you truly need it.

Month 3 — Automate it

Set up a standing order or a regular M-Pesa deposit on payday. Money you never see is money you do not spend.

Month 4 — Find the leaks

Review two months of M-Pesa and bank statements. Small, regular leaks — unused subscriptions, frequent takeaways, airtime bundles you do not finish — can add up to a meaningful monthly saving.

Month 5 — Add windfalls

Commit a share of every bonus, allowance or gift to the fund before you spend any of it.

Month 6 — Review and raise

Celebrate reaching your first milestone, then increase your monthly amount a little.

Emergency funds are not investments. Their job is to be there — safely — when you need them.

What counts as an emergency?

  • Yes: medical costs, urgent home or vehicle repairs you depend on, a sudden loss of income, bereavement costs.
  • No: sales, holidays, planned school fees — those deserve their own savings goals.

Used your fund? That is what it is for. Pause, then rebuild it with the same automatic routine.
